RealSnailMail is a research project developed by Vicky Isley and Paul Smith (aka boredomresearch) at the National Centre for Computer Animation, Bournemouth University. The worlds first messaging service to use real snails http://www.realsnailmail.net harnesses the potential of diminutive molluscs to deliver email messages. Your message travels at the speed of light to our collection point where it waits….. and waits for a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) equipped snail to pass by. Once collected your message is lugged around on the back of a snail until such time as it happens by the dispatch point and is finally forwarded to its recipient.
boredomresearch will use this Blog to publish this project’s research and development – including information on RFID technology, snails and inspirations and experimentations that have contributed to the making of this artwork.

I had seen the snail mail at Siggraph and would like to use it in an article that I am writing. I seem to remember the media tour giving stats on how long it would take for an email to go through. Do you have those and can you send them to me?
Hi Bridgette,
Thanks for getting in contact with us in reference to writing an article on RealSnailMail.
We have done a bit of calculating this morning. As of the 8th Sept 2008 we have 8,977 emails waiting. Based on this if you sent an email today it would take 24yrs 217 days before it gets to the front of the queue. It then may take a further 69.87 days (average snail transfer time) before being forwarded to its final destination. Therefore, a RealSnailMail sent today should arrive approximately by Thursday 16th June 2033. Please note times may differ dependant on snail behaviour and useage.
Hope these stats help with you study.
